On Thursday night vandals hit downtown Los Angeles hard. Authorities are using social networking sites where those guilty have posted videos and pictures. They will also use many pictures obtained from business surveillance cameras and the like.
Thus far, because of the images on Twitter and Facebook mostly, nearly 40 people have been arrested or questioned about the incident and 15 have been booked on felony charges.
“In the age of phone cameras and digital video devices, it has in essence deputized the public in fighting crime,” Lt. Paul Vernon told The Times.”It has added to the maxim that police are the public and the public are the police.”
In this day and age it is nearly impossible to say where an online image or video was first posted. Often when someone ‘reTweet’s or reposts something on a social networking site it can appear as though that person owns the material, however that is not always the case. If you or someone you know has been accused of a crime due to circumstantial evidence, contact the law offices of Los Angeles Defense Attorney Robert Michael Helfend.
Mr Helfend knows that freedom of speech often covers online content and can argue for your rights in this type of case. Don’t wonder what is going to happen, meet with Ventura County Robert Helfend for a free initial consultation and have him help you understand what you are being charged with and what steps to take toward a favorable outcome.

On Friday morning the scene in one Utah prison yard was grim to say the least. Set up and ready for use was an area prepped for the firing squad death of Ronnie Lee Gardner.
Gardener was convicted of a double murder and opted for the execution by firing squad. Reports say that he spent his last day reading a spy novel and watching the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy.
“The anti-death-penalty people think it’s barbaric, and the pro-death-penalty people think it detracts from capital punishment. But when you think of all the methods, the firing squad would be the most dignified. Someone’s standing up and facing their death.” – Deborah Denno, law professor.
Those watching had mixed reactions, some finding it to be not as bad as they thought and some thought it was much worse than they could have imagined.
Gardener had no last words and was declared dead within two minutes of being shot by the five marksmen.

Hollywood actor James Farentino, best known for his role in Dynasty, was arrested last week for misdemeanor battery.

The story is sketchy at best. Apparently Farentino was attempting to make an unidentified man leave his home when the man turned and said that he was making a citizens arrest for battery. When police arrived Farentino was taken into custody as the man was obviously beaten up.
Although this case seems shaky and strange, it is unfortunately not surprising that James in headed back to court. Years ago he was forced to enroll in alcohol abuse rehab as well as see a psychiatrist after being convicted of several counts of stalking. The object of his affection was Frank Sinatra’s youngest daughter Tina.
Farentina is currently free, after paying a hefty bail, and awaiting trail.

Robert O’Ryan was found guilty of stalking Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson, but it seems now that he was not well at the time.
In a Los Angeles court, O’Ryan opted to plea not guilty by reason of insanity and waive his right to a jury trial.
After four days of trial, Judge Michael Pastor convicted the Florida man of felony stalking and burglary charges and two misdemeanor concealed weapons violation.
The judge then took into account the testimonies of two separate psychiatrists and ruled that O’Ryan was insane during Ms. Johnson’s ordeal. It is most likely that he will live out his sentence in a mental hospital after further evaluation.
He had faced up to four years in state prison and two years in county jail. He had waived the right to a jury trial and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
“It’s the right result,” prosecutor Wendy Segall said after the verdict.
“It was clearly an insanity case from the beginning,” O’Ryan’s attorney Judith Greenberg disagreed. “Insanity is a crude weapon for the defense. Perhaps the case shouldn’t be in the system.”
