Nearly 650 people were arrested around the country earlier this week as part of a federal investigation into prostitution and child sex trafficking. More than twenty percent of the arrests were made in the Bay area. The sweep, dubbed Operation Cross Country II, was the second major sweep aimed at arresting those involved in the trafficking of children for sex.

The arrests were made between October 23 and October 28 in 29 cities around the country. In California, arrests were made in Oakland, Concord, Alameda County, San Jose, Campbell, Morgan Hill, Milpitas, San Mateo, Santa Rosa, San Rafael and San Francisco. According to an FBI spokesman, nearly 25 percent of the 47 child prostitutes brought in by the sweep were located in the Bay area. According to information from the FBI, the operation disabled about a dozen large prostitution rings that operated from out-call services, truck stops, casinos and Internet sex sites.
