A Port Hueneme resident who assisted a friend after the murder of an Oxnard businessman will be free on bond until his sentencing in September. Lance Brown, 26, of Port Hueneme will live with his mother and children at her Oxnard home until he is sentenced for his role in helping Jeffrey Aguilar, 23, escape from authorities.

Aguilar is accused of shooting Gurmohinder Singh, 55, as he exited a bank last August. Authorities say Brown provided a cell phone to Aguilar, who is a member of the Colonia Chiques gang. The new cell phone, which was activated in Brown’s name, enabled Aguilar to elude police for about a week after he was identified as a suspect in Singh’s murder. Brown has a prior felony conviction for first degree robbery.

In addition to facing murder charges, Aguilar is also being tried on charges of second degree robbery and two counts of attempted murder for shooting at police as they were attempting to arrest him. Five other people were also accused of assisting Aguilar, including Chrystal Ceja, who has two children with the suspect. She is accused of being an accessory to murder, as well as money laundering.
