On New Year’s Day 2009 a BART police officer shot and killed a man who he said was part of a disturbance on the platform. Johannes Mehserle, the officer, was found guilty on Thursday of involuntary manslaughter.

The family of the deseased, Oscar Grant, says that he was murdered. They feel this way because two officers had Grant on the ground, where they say he was resisting aresst, until Mehserle pulled out his gun and shot the young man in the back. Grant was pronounced dead on scene.

”My son was murdered,” Wanda Johnson, Grant’s mother, said. “He was murdered and the law has not held the officer accountable.”

There has been speculation that Mehsele meant to pull his taser and made a horrific mistake. The entire ordeal was caught on video by several bystander cell phones.
